Winter Community Reading Group: The Monk of Mokha

February 12 @ 6:30 pm - 8:00 pm

Since we’ve opened, we’ve had tons of requests for book clubs/reading groups. Well, we’re excited to announce TWO community reading events in February.

The first book we’ll be reading together is Dave Egger’s The Monk of Mokha (more details below). The second book will be Patti Smith’s Year of the Monkey (details on that discussion can be found here: https://www.facebook.com/events/1025096981174032/.)

The format will be simple: we’ll all read the book, then meet at Wise Blood on Wednesday, February 12th from 6:30-8 pm to discuss.

WISE BLOOD BOOK CLUB POLICY:

Since we expect space at these discussions to be limited, we are asking attendees to purchase a copy of the book at Wise Blood to reserve a seat. Come on in to purchase/order the book and guarantee your spot!

“The Monk of Mokha is the exhilarating true story of a young Yemeni American man, raised in San Francisco, who dreams of resurrecting the ancient art of Yemeni coffee but finds himself trapped in Sana’a by civil war.

Mokhtar Alkhanshali is twenty-four and working as a doorman when he discovers the astonishing history of coffee and Yemen’s central place in it. He leaves San Francisco and travels deep into his ancestral homeland to tour terraced farms high in the country’s rugged mountains and meet beleaguered but determined farmers. But when war engulfs the country and Saudi bombs rain down, Mokhtar has to find a way out of Yemen without sacrificing his dreams or abandoning his people.”
